Experience Interview (first round)

Bain's own term is the "experience interview." In practice it is the first ~10-15 minutes of a ~45-minute block

What they actually ask

The question shapes this round uses. Larpy does not read these out. It builds each one from your own resume, because the generic version is the one you have already rehearsed.

  • Tell me about a time you led a team, and what your specific role was.
  • Tell me about a time you disagreed with someone or faced a conflict, and how you handled it.
  • Tell me about a time you failed or made a mistake, and what you learned.
  • Tell me about the accomplishment you're most proud of.
  • Tell me about a time you persuaded or influenced someone to your point of view.
  • Tell me about a time you worked under pressure or against a tight deadline.
  • Why Bain over McKinsey or BCG?

What this round is judged on

  • Personal impact · your individual contribution, not the team's
  • Leadership & drive · ambition, ownership, and initiative in your stories
  • Communication · concise, structured, specific storytelling under follow-up
  • Teamwork · builds constructively on others ('colleagues never let you fail')
  • Motivation & fit · connects your experience to the role and Bain's operating principles

What happens in each stage
Application review
Resume and often a cover letter; campus applications are tied to a specific office. Bain: "our team will review your application."
Recruiter / HR call (may occur)
Bain's own language is conditional: "you might have a call with a recruiter." Not universal; sometimes replaced by an event or coffee chat.
Online assessment (office-variable)
An online screen is well corroborated and maps to Bain's "online assessments" / "a fun challenge to work through." The specific vendor/product is NOT confirmed and varies by market.
First-round interviews
Typically two ~45-minute interviews, each combining a short experience/fit segment with a case, conducted by consultants and managers. Count is candidate-reported and office-variable.
Final round
Typically 2-3 interviews with more senior interviewers (managers, principals, partners), same structure (experience segment + case). Some offices add a written or group case. Count is candidate-reported.
Offer decision
Office-level committee. Bain emphasizes an "objective scoring system" and that "after each interview, you'll learn exactly how it went."

Sources

Built from what Bain publishes about its own process. No leaked question lists. The questions you get are generated against your own resume, so they are not from anyone else's interview.

  • Objective scoring system, 'how you think,' behavioral interview, questionnaire, 'a fun challenge to work through,' feedback after each interview.

  • 'Several rounds of interviews,' conditional recruiter call, 'your colleagues will never let you fail,' case interviews for consulting roles.

  • Behavioral/experience interview discussing past experiences and connecting skills to Bain's operating principles; case evaluation ('sensible assumptions, quick math, build constructively on others' ideas'); written assignment and online assessment.

  • Behavioral interviews about personal/academic/professional experience; ability to explain motivation for joining Bain; role-customized formats; coding challenges limited to technical roles.
