Online Assessment - Virtual Job Tryout
A spoken stand-in for the Virtual Job Tryout
What they actually ask
The question shapes this round uses. Larpy does not read these out. It builds each one from your own resume, because the generic version is the one you have already rehearsed.
- “Tell me about the work experiences that shaped how you work today.”
- “Describe your preferred style and approach to work.”
- “A stakeholder pushes back on your plan mid-project. Walk me through how you handle it.”
- “You are handed a business you know nothing about and asked what it should do next. Where do you start?”
- “What kind of work do you want more of, and what do you want less of?”
What this round is judged on
- Communication · plain, organised answers
- Customer focus · orientation toward the customer in a decision
- Leadership · taking the call and owning it
- Problem solving · a workable approach to an unfamiliar situation

What happens in each stage›
- Application & Virtual Job Tryout
- Online application, then for many roles an automated assessment Capital One calls the Virtual Job Tryout. It takes 20 to 45 minutes and is assembled from modules: Manage Relationships, Work Your Business Case, Tell Us Your Story and Describe Your Approach. Capital One describes it as evaluating job-related skills like communication, customer focus, leadership and problem solving. Among the student programs it gates the Analyst, Machine Learning and Technology development programs.
- Recruiter Screen
- An initial phone conversation with a Capital One recruiter covering the position, your resume and the enterprise.
- Virtual Test
- Position-dependent. Capital One describes an hour-long virtual exam that tests your knowledge of the position, sitting between the recruiter screen and the hiring manager pre-screen. It does not name a platform and does not describe it as a coding assessment.
- Hiring Manager Pre-Screen
- A 30-minute phone interview with the hiring manager, arranged after the recruiter screen and any virtual testing, covering the position and your background.
- Power Day
- The final round: a series of back-to-back virtual interviews held on Zoom, with video required throughout. What it contains varies by program. For the Technology Development Program, Capital One lists behavioral, case and technical interviews.
- Decision
- Debrief and decision after Power Day. Capital One says candidates most often hear a decision from their recruiter within two weeks.
