Coinbase

Pair programming graded on production-grade code rather than the optimal one-liner, assessed almost entirely through published cultural tenets, with a bar raiser who holds a hell-yes-or-no standard on every panel.

The Coinbase process

3 of 5 stages you can practise here

    Warm, conversational recruiter call

  2. 02
    Online assessment (CodeSignal)

Automated, not live: ~70 min, roughly 3-4 algorithm problems (one warm-up + medium problems). Some frontend/full-stack pipelines skip straight to a pair-programming screen. Not simulated as a live round here.

  3. 03

Collaborative live coding with one engineer in a realistic IDE, not a bare pad

    production-grade codecollaborationcorrectness
  4. 04
    Virtual onsite ("full loop")

Modal composition: two pair-programming/coding rounds (~90 min each, the core of the loop), one system-design round (~60 min, mid/senior), and one behavioral/values round (~30 min, often with the hiring manager). Composition varies by level and org.

    Hiring-committee debrief

Interviewers vote "hell yes" or no; a "maybe" rounds down to a no. Per the Top Talent tenet they ask whether the candidate will raise the team average before making an offer.

Common questions

Does Coinbase use LeetCode-style whiteboarding?
No. The loop centers on pair programming in a realistic IDE. Coinbase explicitly looks for production-grade code (clean, tested, maintainable code you'd ship), not a minimal Leetcode-optimal solution. Per its engineering-hiring guidance, most candidates who don't pass fail at the pair-programming stages, so code quality matters as much as correctness.
How high is the hiring bar?
Deliberately high. In the debrief, interviewers vote "hell yes" or no, and a "maybe" rounds down to a no. Per the Top Talent tenet, they ask whether each candidate "will raise the average on the team" before making an offer.
How much does culture fit matter?
A lot. There's a dedicated values round tied to Coinbase's 10 cultural tenets, and recruiters probe mission alignment ("increase economic freedom in the world"), crypto interest, and comfort with a "Mission First" workplace Coinbase describes as "a refuge from division." Bring specific ownership stories mapped to tenets.
What languages and topics should I expect for coding?
You can typically use your own language (Python is common). Expect medium-difficulty problems weighted toward graphs/BFS-DFS, hash-map/design-a-data-structure, and strings, plus exchange-domain problems like order matching or lot accounting, all graded on code quality and follow-up extensions rather than just a correct answer.
