McKinsey
Every McKinsey interview opens with the Personal Experience Interview: one real story taken apart for ten to fifteen minutes on connection, drive, leadership and growth (McKinsey renamed these dimensions in 2025). This guide runs the PEI; the case and the Solve game are separate.
The McKinsey process
3 of 5 stages you can practise here
- 01
Warm, conversational HR or recruiter call
motivationbackground fitcommunication - 02McKinsey Solve
Gamified digital assessment (ecosystem-building and defense mini-games, sometimes a redesigned case/writing component). A game, not a spoken interview, so this product cannot simulate it. Usually sent before or alongside first-round invites.
- 03
Structured behavioral deep-dive
connectionleadershipdepth & ownership - 04
Same structured single-story deep-dive, but with a partner or associate partner who pushes harder and tolerates less generality
driveleadershipconnection - 05Offer Decision
Committee decision based on consistent performance across all interviews, weighting both PEI (fit) and case (problem solving).
Common questions
- Does this cover the McKinsey case interview?
- No. This guide simulates only the Personal Experience Interview (PEI), the structured behavioral portion of each interview. The business case that shares each session is explicitly excluded, and the case is a spoken/verbal exercise rather than live coding.
- Is there a coding round at McKinsey?
- No. The McKinsey generalist consulting loop has no coding or system-design round. The PEI is a spoken voice interview, and the excluded case is also verbal. Any coding-style prompt would be misattributed.
- What makes a strong PEI answer?
- One story with real personal stakes and genuine conflict, told with consistent 'I' ownership (not 'we'), a specific quantified outcome, and honest reflection on what you would do differently. The interviewer takes a single example deep, so depth and authenticity beat a memorized STAR framework.
- What does McKinsey evaluate in the PEI?
- The PEI assesses the non-case capabilities. McKinsey renamed its four dimensions in 2025 to Connection (influencing and building relationships, formerly Personal Impact), Drive (initiative and pushing through obstacles, formerly Entrepreneurial Drive), Leadership (uniting and developing a diverse team), and Growth (resilience and adaptability, formerly Courageous Change). Problem solving is assessed separately in the case.
