Microsoft

A loop that mixes coding, a design or fundamentals conversation, and a behavioral read, with a final as-appropriate interviewer weighing the hire. Collaboration and growth mindset carry real weight.

The Microsoft process

  2. 02

  3. 03
    Onsite loop

Four to five back-to-back ~1-hour interviews: 3-4 coding rounds plus 1-2 design rounds (design standard at SDE II and above), with behavioral questions woven throughout.

    3 rounds you can practise

A STAR-driven conversation, often with your resume in hand, that also appears woven into coding rounds

  4. 04
    As Appropriate (AA) round

Final interview with a senior leader (often a skip-level) to close doubts and sell the candidate; common but not universal, varies by org, level, and region.

  5. 05
    Debrief / hiring committee

Interviewers submit written hire/no-hire feedback; a debrief reconciles it, then offer and negotiation.

Common questions

How many interview rounds does Microsoft's software engineer loop have?
Typically a recruiter or hiring-manager screen, then an online coding assessment and/or a technical phone screen, then an onsite 'loop' of four to five one-hour interviews mixing coding, design, and behavioral. Many candidates also get a final 'As Appropriate' round with a senior leader before the debrief and offer. Exact counts vary by team and level.
What is the 'As Appropriate' (AA) round?
A final interview, usually with a senior leader such as a skip-level manager, used to close any remaining doubts and to sell the candidate on the role. It can be behavioral, technical, or both. Reaching AA is generally read as a strong positive signal, but it is common rather than universal and varies by org, seniority, and region.
What coding topics should I expect?
Center of gravity is medium-difficulty problems on arrays and strings, hash maps, two pointers and sliding window, linked lists, trees and BSTs, graphs (BFS/DFS), recursion and backtracking, with some dynamic programming. Classic Microsoft-reported problems include counting islands in a grid, linked-list fundamentals, lowest common ancestor, and clone graph.
What does Microsoft value in behavioral interviews?
Microsoft scores culture heavily, centered on a growth mindset ('learn-it-all, not know-it-all') and its mission to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. Interviewers probe learning from failure, collaboration over individual heroics, dealing with ambiguity and changing requirements, and genuine interest in Microsoft's products and mission.
