Conversational interview (first round)

Oliver Wyman's own name for its fit round, run as the opening segment of each case block

What they actually ask

The question shapes this round uses. Larpy does not read these out. It builds each one from your own resume, because the generic version is the one you have already rehearsed.

  • Tell me about the accomplishment you are most proud of and what your specific role in it was.
  • Tell me about a time you took the initiative on something nobody asked you to do.
  • Tell me about a time you solved a problem where the right approach was not obvious.
  • What are your goals for the future, and how does consulting fit them?
  • Tell me about something you do outside your studies that matters to you.

What this round is judged on

  • Interest in business · an articulated reason you care about commercial problems
  • Accomplishments and experiences · specific, personally owned, with real outcomes
  • Initiative, intuition and creativity · Oliver Wyman's own named hiring criteria
  • Life outside your studies · substance beyond the transcript, which the firm names explicitly
  • Communication · concise and clear, since this segment is time-boxed by the case that follows

What happens in each stage
Application & CV screen
Online application through the Oliver Wyman careers portal. Oliver Wyman welcomes 'all academic majors or industry experiences' and says it values 'initiative, intuition, creativity, and a strong problem-solving mindset' plus 'evidence of an interesting and impactful life outside of your studies'.
Online assessment (office-variable, not simulated here)
Office- and cohort-dependent, and the least certain element of this loop: no Oliver Wyman careers page mentions an online assessment, and the global, UK/Ireland and Netherlands interview-prep pages are identical in naming only two interview types. Treat it as NOT company-confirmed. It is not a spoken round and is out of scope for this product either way.
First-round interviews
Each block pairs a conversational segment with a case. Oliver Wyman names the two interview types but does not publish how many interviews there are or how long they run, so any count is candidate-reported rather than company-confirmed. This product simulates the conversational portion only.
Final-round interviews
Same conversational-plus-case structure with more senior interviewers, including partners. Count and length are again not published by Oliver Wyman and are candidate-reported. The conversational portion is simulated; the case is not.
Case interview (not simulated here)
Oliver Wyman calls it 'an interactive exercise in analytical thinking', often based on real client challenges. It runs as a fixed sequence of numbered sub-questions the interviewer poses in order, with data released only when you ask. Verbal, not coding, and excluded from this product by design.
Offer decision
Office-level decision weighing both the conversational and case portions across every interview. Oliver Wyman does not publish turnaround times.

Entry points (intern and new consultant); the stated hiring criteria 'initiative, intuition, creativity, and a strong problem-solving mindset'; all academic majors welcomed; 'evidence of an interesting and impactful life outside of your studies'.

  • The case runs as a fixed sequence of numbered interviewer-posed sub-questions (structure, costs, profitability, risks, recommendation), each carrying its own stated evaluation criteria.

  • Per-question evaluation criteria including quantitative analysis and 'ability to synthesize information into a meaningful insight and drive the case forward'; case data released only when the candidate asks for it.
